ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY TO SUPPORT LEARNING AND EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING NEEDS

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability. This is a legal entitlement that has provided significant support for students in their schools and allows for the use of Assistive Technology (AT) to promote academic functioning as a way of ameliorating a disability.

There is a wide variety of Assistive Technology that can help individuals with learning differences live up to their academic and vocational potential so that they can succeed in school, work and life. AT solutions can involve hardware, in either PC or Apple platforms, and software or apps that are used to facilitate learning and vocational progress. Specialized software and equipment can assist in reading, writing, grammar, spelling and note-taking. Other kinds of technology can help you with more specific executive functioning needs, such as organization of materials, time management, development of study skills, and sensory input. Individuals with Learning Disabilities including Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, ADHD, and Autism, often benefit from these technologies in high school, college, graduate school and beyond.

At Heights Psychology Collective we are staunch advocates in our support of students needs so that they are able to apply themselves to their fullest potential. We have developed Assistive Technology assessments to help determine best-fit technology for your specific needs. The evaluations are performed by Laura Gordon, PsyD, who has deep knowledge and extensive experience with a variety of Assistive Technology programs to support learning and executive functioning needs The evaluation process includes an initial consultation with Dr. Gordon to gather background information and review prior testing to establish an understanding of learning needs, followed by two more sessions that involve setting up and practicing with different technologies, devices and software. In addition to providing assessments, Dr. Gordon is also available for ongoing consultation and can provide documentation of need of accommodations so that you or your student can access these technologies in their programs.

Our practice is passionate about our support of individuals with disabilities, and we strive to support you or your student to overcome any obstacles and find the best adaptations in your learning or professional life.
