Laura Gordon barrett, Psy.D
Clinical Psychologist and School Psychologist
I’ve always put great stock in the power of both our inner lives and our self-expression, personally and in my work as a therapist. Since childhood, I’ve fostered my love of the environment, animals and athletics, working with wildlife rescue and training as an equestrian. I’ve also been a lifelong artist, as a painter and photographer. It is my great privilege to help my clients cultivate their own rich self-perception and ability to express who they are. I create a nurturing therapeutic space, where people who may have often felt on the side lines can experience a profound sense of safety to engage in the process of therapy and ultimately experience their own value and self-worth.
I attended William James College, where I got my Doctorate in Psychology, a specialist degree (CAGS) in School Psychology, and a Master of Professional Psychology, so that I could work in schools and give support to students who might not otherwise have received it. I ultimately joined Heights Psychology Collective to move to private practice, where I realized I could have more power to integrate my interests and really focus on “being in it” with my clients. I work holistically and from a place of great curiosity. I integrate a client’s environment, nutrition, sense of how they feel in their bodies, as well as understanding and working towards their goals in the context of where they are in their lives.
I specialize in supporting college and graduate school students as they navigate the challenges of transitioning into the adult world. I practice psychotherapy and coaching, with a focus on executive functioning, ADHD, Autism and learning disabilities in teens through adulthood. I also support students with identifying the kinds of assistive technology that will accommodate their executive functioning and learning needs. I also collaborate with student disability services to set up learning plans and accommodations in higher education. I feel fortunate to help students successfully navigate the challenges of college curriculum. In addition to my experience in trauma, anxiety, depression, and mood disorders, I have an interest in sports and performance psychology, assisting athletes and performers in unlocking their full potential by addressing the mental aspects of performance.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, I moved to Massachusetts for college and graduate school, but feel so fortunate to have come full circle, coaching and practicing therapy and working with my fellow Brooklynites. Whether we are discussing the relationship between our environment and our internal states, or creating a piece of artwork together, I find so much meaning in collaborating with the people who step into my office. I’m thrilled to participate in a person’s journey to self-discovery, calm, and joy.
